BMI Calculator: Calculate Your Body Mass Index Online Free
Our BMI calculator is a free online tool that computes your Body Mass Index — a simple, widely-used measure of body fat based on your height and weight. Whether you are checking for BMI for men, BMI for women, or BMI for children, this calculator provides instant results with your BMI category, healthy weight range, and detailed health insights.
Body Mass Index is a screening tool that helps identify potential weight-related health risks. While BMI is not a diagnostic tool, it serves as a useful starting point for understanding your overall health. Regular BMI monitoring, combined with other health metrics, helps you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

BMI Formula and Calculation
BMI = (Weight in lbs × 703) ÷ Height² (in²)
Worked Example (Metric):
Weight = 70 kg, Height = 1.75 m (175 cm)
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86
Category: Normal weight (18.5-24.9)
Worked Example (Imperial):
Weight = 154 lbs, Height = 5'9" (69 inches)
BMI = (154 × 703) ÷ (69 × 69) = 108,262 ÷ 4,761 = 22.74
BMI Categories for Adults
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5 — May indicate malnutrition, eating disorders, or other health issues.
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5-24.9 — Healthy weight range associated with lowest disease risk.
- Overweight: BMI 25-29.9 — Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions.
- Obese Class I: BMI 30-34.9 — Moderate to high risk of obesity-related diseases.
- Obese Class II: BMI 35-39.9 — High risk of serious health complications.
- Obese Class III: BMI 40+ — Very high risk, also called severe or morbid obesity.
BMI for Asian Indians: Adjusted Ranges
Research shows that Asian Indians have higher body fat percentage and higher risk of metabolic diseases at lower BMI compared to Caucasians. Therefore, the World Health Organization recommends adjusted BMI cutoffs for Asian populations:
- Underweight: Below 18.5
- Normal (healthy): 18.5 - 22.9
- Overweight: 23 - 24.9
- Obese: 25 and above
Our BMI calculator shows both standard and Asian-adjusted categories for Indian users.
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important limitations:
- Does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass
- Does not account for fat distribution (belly fat vs. hip fat)
- May overestimate body fat in athletes and bodybuilders
- May underestimate body fat in older adults who have lost muscle
- Does not consider ethnicity, age, or gender differences
- Not accurate for pregnant women, lactating mothers, or very muscular individuals
For a complete health assessment, combine BMI with waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.
