VIT GPA Calculator
Calculate your SGPA and CGPA using the official VIT 10-point grading system. Supports S/A/B/C/D/E/F grades for VIT Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal, and AP campuses.
What is the VIT GPA Calculator?
The VIT GPA calculator is a specialized tool designed for students of Vellore Institute of Technology across all its campuses — VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT Bhopal, and VIT AP. It helps you calculate your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) using the official VIT 10-point grading system. Instead of manually multiplying credits by grade points and adding everything up, this tool does it in a split second with zero errors.
VIT follows a specific grading scale where S = 10, A = 9, B = 8, C = 7, D = 6, E = 5, and F = 0. The calculation is straightforward: multiply each course credit by its grade point, add everything up, and divide by the total credits. But when you have 6 or 7 courses per semester with varying credits, doing this manually takes time and leaves room for mistakes. This calculator gives you the exact SGPA and CGPA that matches what VIT officially computes.
How to Use the VIT SGPA Calculator
Using the VIT SGPA calculator takes about ten seconds:
- Pick the number of courses you took this semester (up to 10)
- Enter the credits for each course — most theory courses are 3 or 4 credits, labs are 1 or 2
- Select your grade from the dropdown (S, A, B, C, D, E, or F)
- Click "Calculate GPA" and your SGPA appears instantly
The calculator also shows your total grade points and total credits, so you can track those numbers across semesters for CGPA calculation. If you want to calculate CGPA, switch to CGPA mode and enter your previous cumulative data along with current semester courses.
VIT Grading System Explained
Understanding the VIT grading system is important for every student. VIT uses a 10-point scale where each letter grade corresponds to a specific grade point. An S grade (10 points) is the highest you can achieve, typically requiring 85% or above in the course. An A grade (9 points) reflects excellent performance. B (8), C (7), D (6), and E (5) represent progressively lower but passing performance. E is the minimum passing grade. F (0) means you failed the course and will need to reappear.
What makes VIT different from some other universities is that even if you score a high percentage, the grade depends on the relative distribution in your class. So two students scoring the same marks in different sections could potentially receive different grades. This makes it all the more important to track your GPA carefully using a reliable calculator rather than assuming your percentage directly translates to a specific GPA.
How to Calculate VIT CGPA
Your CGPA at VIT is the cumulative average across all semesters you have completed. The formula is the same as SGPA, but applied to all courses taken so far:
To calculate your CGPA: use the calculator for each completed semester and note down the total grade points and total credits. Then add all grade points together, add all credits together, and divide. For example: Semester 1 (180 grade points, 20 credits = 9.0 SGPA), Semester 2 (165 grade points, 20 credits = 8.25 SGPA). CGPA = (180 + 165) ÷ (20 + 20) = 345 ÷ 40 = 8.625.
Our calculator's CGPA mode lets you enter your previous cumulative total along with current semester courses, giving you an updated CGPA automatically.
Why Your VIT GPA Matters
Your GPA at VIT affects more than just your grade card. Campus placement companies set minimum CGPA cutoffs — typically 6.0 to 8.0 depending on the company and role. Top recruiters like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs often require 8.0 or above. Higher education applications for MTech, MBA, or MS abroad depend heavily on your CGPA. Some VIT programs have CGPA requirements for honours degrees and specializations.
Beyond placements, your GPA also determines eligibility for student exchange programs, research assistantships, and even hostel accommodation preferences in some cases. Tracking your SGPA each semester and planning ahead with a GPA calculator helps you set realistic targets and identify which courses need more attention before exams.
