SGPA Calculator
Calculate your Semester Grade Point Average instantly using the standard grading scale. Supports S/A/B/C/D/E/F grades with credit-based calculation.
What is an SGPA Calculator?
An SGPA calculator is a tool that computes your Semester Grade Point Average — the weighted average of grade points you earned in all courses during a single semester. It uses the formula SGPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits). Instead of manually calculating each course contribution and summing them up, this tool does it instantly and accurately.
SGPA is the standard measure of academic performance used by universities across India and many other countries. Each course in a semester carries a certain number of credit hours, which represent the weight or importance of that course. Higher-credit courses have a bigger impact on your SGPA. The SGPA calculation takes both the grade you earned and the credit weight of each course into account.
How to Use the SGPA Calculator
Using this SGPA calculator takes less than 30 seconds:
- Select the number of courses you took this semester (up to 10)
- Enter credits for each course — theory courses are typically 3 or 4 credits, labs are 1 or 2
- Choose your grade from the dropdown (S/A/B/C/D/E/F)
- Click "Calculate SGPA" to see your semester GPA, total grade points, and credits
The calculator also provides an interpretation of your SGPA and shows whether your performance is outstanding, excellent, or needs improvement.
SGPA Formula and Calculation Method
The universal SGPA formula is: SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) / Σ(Ci)
Where Ci is the credit hours for course i and GPi is the grade point for course i. Let us walk through a detailed example with 5 courses:
- Mathematics (4 credits, S grade = 10): 4 × 10 = 40 grade points
- Physics (3 credits, A grade = 9): 3 × 9 = 27 grade points
- Chemistry (3 credits, B grade = 8): 3 × 8 = 24 grade points
- English (2 credits, A grade = 9): 2 × 9 = 18 grade points
- Programming Lab (1.5 credits, S grade = 10): 1.5 × 10 = 15 grade points
SGPA vs CGPA: What is the Difference?
Many students confuse SGPA and CGPA. SGPA is your grade point average for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your average across all semesters completed so far. While SGPA tells you how you performed in a specific semester, CGPA gives the overall picture of your academic performance throughout your degree program.
From SGPAs to CGPA conversion: CGPA = Σ(SGPAi × Creditsi) / Σ(Creditsi) for all semesters. You cannot simply average your SGPAs — each semester must be weighted by its total credits. This is why maintaining a high SGPA in high-credit semesters is particularly important for your overall CGPA.
Why Your SGPA Matters
Your SGPA matters for several reasons. First, it determines your CGPA over time. Second, many scholarships and academic awards consider semester-wise performance. Third, if you plan to apply for student exchange programs or research internships, your recent SGPAs are often evaluated. Fourth, some companies look at your overall academic trend — improving SGPAs demonstrate growth and consistency.
Regularly calculating your SGPA after each semester helps you stay aware of your academic standing. Our SGPA calculator makes this easy by giving you instant results along with helpful feedback on your performance level.
